Just days after leading out Forest Green Rovers at the FA Umbro Trophy final, David Norton is looking for a new job. The former Aston Villa full-back was a proud man when he returned to Villa Park last Sunday as joint manager, along with Nigel Spink, of the Trophy finalists. But the Gloucestershire club's 1-0 defeat to Canvey Island was to be his farewell to Forest Green.Spink and Norton took over at The Lawn last September and not only led Rovers to the Trophy final but also rescued them from relegation from the Nationwide Conference. But it is known that they did not believe a managerial partnership was a viable long-term option. This week the Forest Green board appointed Spink as manager and asked Norton to be his assistant.
That offer was declined, and Norton has left the club on good terms to seek a managerial opportunity elsewhere.Spink, the 42-year-old former Villa goalkeeper, has retired from playing in order to concentrate on his off-field role.Elsewhere, Bill Williams has left Dover Athletic to take over at Kingstonian, who have been relegated from the Conference, in succession to Geoff Chapple. Bolton Wanderers - the club that arguably hates the whole idea of the play-offs more than any other - are on their way to Cardiff for the First Division final on 28 May after a comprehensive victory over the side that had much to do with undermining their bid for automatic promotion.
